What is Mettle?

Mettle is a business bank account (opens in a new tab) by NatWest, designed primarily for UK sole traders and limited companies with up to two owners. It is managed through an iOS or Android app and comes with a UK account number, sort code and business debit card. The account is aimed at people who want straightforward day-to-day banking alongside tools for invoices, expenses, tax and bookkeeping.

The standard Mettle business account has no monthly account fee, although optional paid add-ons are available. Mettle currently supports one account per person, and only one owner can access a limited-company account. These restrictions make it especially relevant to freelancers, contractors and smaller owner-managed businesses rather than companies that need several account users, lending or more complex international banking.

My experience using Mettle for daily business banking

I use Mettle for my daily business banking, so this assessment is based on regular use rather than a short test. The part I value most is how little friction the account creates. The app makes the balance, card activity and recent transactions easy to understand, and routine payments do not feel buried beneath unnecessary menus.

That straightforward experience is why I scored onboarding and usability 10/10. Reliability has also been strong in my use, earning 9/10. Mettle is not the broadest business-banking product, but for the jobs I need it to perform most often - receiving money, making payments, keeping records organised and feeding transactions into FreeAgent - it has been consistently effective.

Why the Mettle and FreeAgent integration stands out

The FreeAgent integration is the main feature that sets Mettle apart for me. Once connected, cleared Mettle transactions can sync into FreeAgent, reducing duplicate entry and giving me a clearer view of cash flow, expenses, invoices and upcoming tax responsibilities. I can keep everyday banking and accounting connected instead of treating them as two separate admin jobs.

FreeAgent included - condition

Eligible Mettle customers can get FreeAgent included, provided they make at least one qualifying transaction from the Mettle account each month. If that condition is not met, or the Mettle account is closed while FreeAgent continues to be used, FreeAgent's normal fees may apply. Optional paid FreeAgent add-ons may also cost extra.

For my workflow, this integration supports the 10/10 scores for integrations and compatibility, and reporting and data portability. It is a practical benefit rather than a feature I only noticed on a product list. The Mettle FreeAgent pairing is the main reason I keep this account as my primary day-to-day business bank.

What Mettle does well

  • Usability: the interface is clear enough for frequent daily banking without making simple actions feel complicated.
  • Value: a no-monthly-fee account combined with eligible access to FreeAgent is unusually useful for a small business watching overheads.
  • Bookkeeping: transaction syncing, categorisation and receipt handling reduce repetitive admin.
  • Small-business focus: tax tools, invoices and accounting connections address real sole-trader and owner-managed-company needs.
  • Support and reliability: my experience has been strong enough to score these 9/10 rather than treating the free price as an excuse for a weaker service.
  • Security: the account is provided by National Westminster Bank plc trading as Mettle and eligible deposits receive FSCS protection.

Limitations to consider

Mettle is not designed to cover every requirement of a larger or more complex company. It does not offer lending facilities, outbound international payments or cheque support. Limited companies can have no more than two owners and only one owner can access the account. Trusts, clubs, societies, charities, LLPs and PLCs are not supported.

Those limitations explain the 7/10 core-features score. They do not undermine the account for my own day-to-day use, but they matter for established SMEs that need several users, borrowing, international payments or a broader service model. Review Mettle's eligibility page (opens in a new tab) before applying.

Is Mettle safe?

The Mettle bank account is provided by National Westminster Bank plc trading as Mettle. NatWest is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority. Eligible deposits are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (opens in a new tab) up to the current statutory limit. Check Mettle's official account information (opens in a new tab) and the FSCS for the latest position rather than relying on a hard-coded protection figure.

My Mettle score: 94/100

The overall score reflects a product that performs exceptionally well for my own daily banking and accounting workflow. The lower core-features score recognises the genuine limitations around lending, international payments, cheque support and multi-user access rather than pretending the account is suitable for every business. Scoring follows the published methodology.
